Chapter 5

She struggled to keep up with Bill as his long legs carried him quickly across the abandoned sidewalks. The shelter was in South Boston, in an area dominated by tenement buildings. Many of the residents were minorities, and the recent economic downturn had hit them hard. Unemployment was high, and the schools in the neighborhood were hurting for money. Maggie had participated in a lunchtime reading program at one of the elementary schools, and she was appalled to see the condition of the school’s library. She donated a bag full of her favorite children’s books to augment the library’s meager collection. She could not imagine life without books.

Bill turned to her and held out his hand. “You doing okay? I’m sorry I’m moving so fast; I’m just worried about her. She’s had a hard life. She was out on the streets, turning tricks, and it took everything I had to convince her to come to the shelter. I just managed to get her back into school and now this…”

She took his hand and tried not to think about how good it felt to be touching him again. They raced along. She asked, “Do you have any idea where she might go?”

He shrugged. “A few. When I found her, before she came to the shelter, she used to hang out down near the L Street Tavern – I thought we’d try there first.”

But when they got to the famous tavern she was nowhere to be seen. Bill swore under his breath. “It’s freezing out here. She can’t stay out tonight; she’ll die.” He looked down the street speculatively. “If I remember right, she grew up near here and she might still have some family there. Let me call the shelter and see if I can get the address.”

He pulled his cell phone from his pocket and made the call while Maggie stamped her feet to keep them warm. She was awfully glad she had opted for jeans and a sweater instead of that stupid slinky dress. She would have been frostbitten by now. She glanced at Bill and saw him jotting down an address on a scrap of paper from his pocket. He hung up the phone.

“It’s two blocks from here. We’ll head over, and if she’s not there, we’ll double back and regroup.”

They set off again, arriving in a few minutes at a squat apartment building covered with graffiti. Bill pushed the door, which was hanging open. He did not bother ringing the bell. “She wouldn’t answer anyway,” he said with a shrug. They climbed the stairs to the third floor. She struggled to catch her breath as he rapped on the door of an apartment with a multi-colored tinsel wreath on display. Nobody answered, but they could both hear a television inside, so he knocked again, harder this time.

The door flew open. A petite woman stood there, wearing skinny jeans and a low-cut top. The resemblance to Tasha was strong, this woman almost looked like she could be Tasha’s sister, but Bill said, “Ms.
